Ceramic Coatings and Your Boat
Ceramic coating has been around for a while, recently it has been marketed as a DIY cure all for scratching, faded, and chalky finishes and that is simply not true.
True ceramic coating will last for a long time and provide a high gloss finish in the marine environment. Your boat must be prepped using a multi-step process to these results. The process is usually done by professionals and takes much longer than a traditional Buff and Wax. The cost is much higher than traditional prep we have seen costs 300% or more expensive.
Several companies are marketing spray on "ceramic coating". If your boat is almost new and has no fade, scratches or a chalky surface they can provide a good high gloss finish. However, our experience is it really won't last multiple years as advertised. The product available to professional detailers is very expensive and not typically available to the DIY'er. If your boat is older, you will likely be disappointed with a DIY spray on ceramic coating.
Based on all of the products we at Atlantic have tried, they are no better than a good wax job at best. None lasted the multi-year as they claim. If you have an older hull that is faded, chalky or scratched it will need to have that rough surface cut down to smooth clean gelcoat, then wet sanded, compounded, polished and finally waxed.
