Marine Battery Recommendations for 2023
Recently our staff attended a seminar one of the topics was marine batteries. Over the past couple of years technology has given birth to many different options of batteries not all are recomended for gas powered outboards and I/O. To date not enough data has been gathered and analyzed to form an opinion on Lithium so as of now we don't recommend them.
This leaves the old school lead acid and AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) types as options. We have been told by two different vendors recently the lead used in most lead acid batteries is recycled. We have noticed more battery failures under warranty recently this may be the cause.
Lead acid batteries come in three marine categories for marine use Starting, Deep Cyle and Dual purpose. Starting batteries provide fast, short duration power. They can be recharged easily and should provide good service If you have a simple electrical system. However, if you draw them down to less than 50% often, they will fail. The deep cycle is the opposite its best for long lower draws and will recover after being drawn down to below 50% often. The dual purpose is as the name implies but in our experience is not the best choice for lots of starts like a starting battery or supply enough capacity if running a trolling motor for instance.
Lead Acid Battery
Lead acid batteries also have a few negative characteristics and one main positive the initial cost. Lead acid is less expensive than AGM.
- Produces gas when charging which can be explosive and corrosive to wiring and electrical components.
- Can spill and the acid can damage wiring and components
- Can be damaged more easily from impact shock and must be mounted on a horizontal surface.
- Must be maintained meaning the fluid level must be checked routinely which can be a problem is some applications where the batteries are not real accessible.
AGM Battery
This type of construction means the acid is absorbed in the mat and isn't free flowing in the battery. This is a major improvement for several reasons. The only real negative to AGM is the cost. But in the long run the years of extra service make them a better choice.

- Can be mounted at any angle and wont leak.
- No off gassing so no corrosion issues to other components
- They last much longer
