Boat maintenance is the scheduled work that keeps a boat running through a New England season instead of breaking down mid-trip. For boats kept in Plymouth and around Cape Cod Bay, the combination of salt water, ethanol-blended pump fuel, and a short use window leaves little margin for skipped service. Engines that ran fine through July fail by September because a worn impeller or a dirty fuel filter became a real problem.

The two main pieces of boat maintenance are seasonal service and winterization. Seasonal service happens in spring before launch and ideally mid-season for boats that see heavy summer use: oil and filter changes, plug checks, gear oil inspection, anode replacement, and a run-up to verify cooling flow. Winterization happens in fall before the first hard freeze: engine fogging, fuel stabilization, antifreeze through the cooling system, and battery storage. Together they cover the predictable failure modes that take boats out of service every year.

We service the major outboard manufacturers (Mercury, Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki, Evinrude, Tohatsu) and most inboard and I/O drive setups. The single most common maintenance mistake is assuming a boat is fine because it ran the last time you used it. Marine engines decay faster between uses than during use: salt sits in cooling passages, ethanol breaks down in the tank, and seals dry out without being submerged. A boat that sat for a month between uses often needs work that a boat in continuous use does not. Routine service catches it before the engine fails on the water.
