Chartplotter & GPS Installation in Plymouth, MA
Chartplotter and GPS installation for all makes and models including Garmin, Lowrance, and Humminbird. Network integration, transducer mounting, and full chart card setup so you leave the dock knowing exactly where you are.
Which chartplotter is right for your boat?
The right chartplotter depends on four things: screen size relative to your helm space, whether you fish or cruise (or both), whether you want to network it to other devices, and what your existing transducer situation looks like.
Garmin, Lowrance, and Humminbird are the three brands we install most often at Atlantic. All three make excellent units at multiple price points. Garmin tends to be the strongest choice for coastal navigation and cruising. Lowrance and Humminbird have historically had the edge in sonar and fish-finding capability. At the mid-to-upper tier, the gap between brands has closed considerably, and the install quality matters more than which logo is on the screen.
For South Shore boaters, we recommend charts that cover Cape Cod Bay, Buzzards Bay, and the Elizabeth Islands at a minimum. Most current chartplotters come with a baseline chart package and accept upgrades via Navionics, C-MAP, or manufacturer-specific cards. We load and configure the chart card during the install so you are not figuring it out in the parking lot before your first trip.
Transducer placement is where a lot DIY installs go wrong. A transom-mount transducer that catches air at speed gives you a blank screen right when you need depth information most. We evaluate your hull and running angle before recommending transom-mount, in-hull, or through-hull placement. On fiberglass hulls we have a preference for shooting through the hull when the layup allows it: no holes, no turbulence, and better readings at speed.
Most current multifunction displays also support NMEA 2000 network integration, which means your chartplotter can display engine data, depth, wind, and AIS targets from other devices on the same backbone. If you are starting fresh or upgrading an older boat, we plan the network before the first wire goes in.
Problems We Fix
Our experts can diagnose and resolve any issue
GPS signal loss at the helm
Antenna placed in a location blocked by the t-top, radar arch, or other structure above it.
Blank sonar screen at speed
Transducer losing water contact from hull turbulence at planing speed.
Wrong chart coverage loaded
Charts not configured for your actual fishing or cruising area before leaving the dock.
Network data not showing
NMEA 2000 connection dropping engine data, depth, or speed on the chartplotter display.
Screen unreadable in direct sun
Wrong mounting angle or insufficient brightness for the helm position and sun exposure.
Chartplotter and fish finder not synced
Two devices running independently when a single networked display would do both jobs.

Garmin vs Lowrance vs Humminbird: which should I get?
All three are solid brands. Garmin has the strongest coastal charting software and the most intuitive interface for cruising. Lowrance and Humminbird have strong sonar performance, especially for fishing. At the mid-range and above, the difference is mostly personal preference and which network ecosystem you are already in. We will help you pick based on your actual use.
Can I keep my existing transducer?
Sometimes. If your current transducer uses a compatible connector and frequency, it may work with a new display. We will check compatibility before recommending a new transducer.
What is the difference between a chartplotter and a multifunction display?
A multifunction display (MFD) is a chartplotter that also handles sonar, radar, camera feeds, and network data from other devices. Most current installs use MFDs because the price difference versus a chartplotter-only unit has narrowed considerably.
Do I need a separate fish finder if my chartplotter has sonar?
Usually not. Current MFDs with a quality transducer perform as well as or better than standalone fish finders at most price points. The exception is tournament-level fishing where side-imaging or live-sonar is the priority.
