July is the month the phone does not stop. Close to 150 people called the shop last month, and while every boat is a little different, the questions were not. The same handful of problems came up week after week, from small kickers on skiffs to sterndrives on 24-footers.
So we went back through the month and pulled out the patterns. No names, no boats, just the questions and how we think about them. If you keep a boat around Plymouth, odds are decent one of these was your July too.
"It cranks, but it won't start" (or it starts and runs rough)
This was the biggest group of calls by a wide margin, and it showed up in a lot of forms: no spark at all, cranks but never fires, stalls at idle, runs on three cylinders instead of four, will not come up past a certain RPM, idles too high, or drops into limp mode on the way out of the harbor.
In midsummer, a big share of these trace back to fuel. Gas that sat since spring, ethanol that pulled in moisture, a filter with water in the bowl, or carburetors and injectors with varnish in them. The rest usually live on the ignition and electrical side: plugs, coils, a stator, or a connection that corroded over the winter.
Two things help before you call. Notice exactly when it misbehaves: cold start versus hot restart, at idle versus wide open, only under load. That one detail narrows the diagnosis a lot. And resist the urge to keep cranking, because long crank sessions foul plugs, flood cylinders, and can cook a starter.
Safety first: if you smell fuel, see it pooling in the bilge, or find a wet fuel line, do not start the engine and do not run the boat to the shop. Same goes for no water out of the telltale, an overheat alarm, or the engine dropping itself into a protected low-power mode. That is the engine telling you it is about to hurt itself.
"Do you have this part?"
Parts questions were the second biggest theme: carburetors and carb kits, stators, sensors, belts, fuel filter housings, fuel lines, cowl covers, injectors, lower unit components. The motors ranged from mid-1980s two-strokes to current four-strokes, and the brands we heard most were Yamaha, Mercury, Suzuki, Tohatsu, Honda, Johnson, and Evinrude.
The honest answer on any given part is that it depends on the motor, and the fastest way to find out is to give us the numbers. Not the horsepower, and not just the year: the model and serial number off the tag, usually on the swivel or transom bracket. Manufacturers make running changes mid-model, so two motors that look identical can take different parts.
On older motors some pieces are simply discontinued, and the question becomes whether a good used part exists or whether the component can be serviced instead of replaced. Gummed-up carburetors and injectors can often be cleaned and rebuilt rather than swapped, which is worth asking about before you buy new.
Pro tip: if the motor is coming apart for one repair, that is the cheap moment to do the impeller, plugs, and gaskets that are already exposed. Doing them later means paying for the same teardown twice.
"Is it worth fixing, or should I repower?"
Plenty of July callers were not asking us to fix something. They were asking whether they should. Powerhead replacements, rebuild estimates, a flywheel on a sterndrive, a transom plate, and a fair number of "what is my old motor actually worth" questions.
There is no universal number, but there is a way to think about it. Weigh the repair against what the motor is realistically worth running and how many seasons it has left, not against what a new one costs. Then look at what the repair touches: controls, cables, gauges, wiring. A repower often pulls those in, which can make a big job bigger and occasionally makes a rebuild the better value. And be honest about the hull, because money spent on a strong motor bolted to a soft transom is money spent twice.
How you use the boat matters too. Someone who runs offshore twice a week and someone who putters a harbor a dozen times a summer should not get the same recommendation, and we try not to give them one.
"Can somebody look at it this week?"
Timing questions were constant, and they deserve a straight answer rather than a comfortable one. July is the busiest stretch of the year for every boat shop on this coast, and the honest limit is usually not the bench, it is the parts. If something has to be ordered, that lead time often sets the schedule no matter how fast the work itself goes. It is why a repair quoted as a few hours of labor can still take a couple of weeks to hand back.
What moves things along: describe the symptom clearly up front, get the boat to us rather than waiting on a slot to open, and answer quickly once we call with a diagnosis and a number. Jobs stall far more often waiting on an approval than waiting on a wrench.
"Do you even work on that?"
A steady share of July calls were scope questions, and the range was wide: outboards and sterndrives, inboards, lower units, steering, tilt and trim, drive leaks, jet skis, trailer bunks and lighting, inflatables, fiberglass and gel coat damage.
Most of it is boat work and most of it is what we do. Some of it is not, and when a job belongs to a different trade, like finish carpentry on a deck, the right answer is to say so and point you somewhere better. We would rather lose the ticket than learn on your boat.
Same with location. We are in Plymouth and we see boats from across the South Shore and down toward the canal. If you are farther out, ask, and we will tell you honestly whether it makes sense.
What to have ready when you call
The calls that turned into scheduled work fastest all had the same details in them:
- Boat make and length
- Engine make, model, year, and horsepower
- The serial number if it is a parts question
- What the boat is doing, and exactly when it does it
- Where the boat is right now, and on a trailer or in the water
- A callback number, and how soon you need it back
Frequently Asked Questions
Why won't my outboard start after sitting for a few weeks?
Most often it is fuel related. Ethanol blends absorb moisture and start breaking down within a couple of months, so gas left in a tank or in carburetor bowls can varnish and block small passages. Water in the fuel filter is common too, and ignition parts and corroded connections are the next place to look.
Do I really need the engine serial number to order a part?
It helps more than anything else you can give us. Manufacturers change components mid-model-year, so horsepower and year alone are often not enough to identify the right part. The serial number is on a tag on the motor, usually on the transom or swivel bracket.
Is it better to rebuild an engine or repower?
It depends on the motor's remaining life, the condition of the hull and rigging, and how hard you use the boat. We are happy to talk it through before you commit to either one.
