Boat repair is its own discipline. Marine engines, hulls, and electrical systems fail differently than cars because they live in salt water, see massive vibration, and run with intake-water cooling. General mechanics can sometimes fix a boat the same way they fix a car, but most of the time the boat fails again within the season. The salt, the ethanol fuel, and the layup of a fiberglass hull all demand procedures and parts that a typical auto shop does not stock.
At Atlantic Boat Repair we cover three main areas of repair work. Engine and drivetrain repair includes compression issues, no-start diagnosis, lower-unit failures, cooling-system rebuilds, and full repower jobs. Fiberglass and structural work includes gelcoat cracks, hull blisters, transom failure, impact damage, and stringer or deck core repair. Trailer repair includes bearings, brakes, axles, lights, marine-grade wiring, and frame work. Each of those has its own playbook and its own tools, and we run all three under one roof.
Our diagnostic process starts with the symptoms you describe and works backward toward the root cause. Marine systems compound problems quickly: an old impeller causes an overheat, the overheat causes a head gasket to fail, the failed head gasket lets coolant into the cylinder, and the cylinder seizes. Diagnosing the wrong link in that chain means replacing the wrong part. We run compression tests, fault-code scans, cooling-flow checks, and on-water diagnostics before we order parts.
The boats we see are mostly kept in Plymouth or hauled from the surrounding Cape Cod Bay area, so we know what fails most: water-pump impellers stiffened from sitting all winter, fuel system damage from ethanol, lower-unit seal failures from running aground, transom rot from years of moisture under the splash well. Local context speeds up diagnosis. So does knowing the major boat brands and their common failure modes. We service both two-stroke and four-stroke outboards from Mercury, Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki, Evinrude, and Tohatsu, plus most inboard and I/O setups.
