The right chartplotter depends on four things: screen size relative to your helm space, whether you fish or cruise (or both), whether you want to network it to other devices, and what your existing transducer situation looks like.

Garmin, Lowrance, and Humminbird are the three brands we install most often at Atlantic. All three make excellent units at multiple price points. Garmin tends to be the strongest choice for coastal navigation and cruising. Lowrance and Humminbird have historically had the edge in sonar and fish-finding capability. At the mid-to-upper tier, the gap between brands has closed considerably, and the install quality matters more than which logo is on the screen.

For South Shore boaters, we recommend charts that cover Cape Cod Bay, Buzzards Bay, and the Elizabeth Islands at a minimum. Most current chartplotters come with a baseline chart package and accept upgrades via Navionics, C-MAP, or manufacturer-specific cards. We load and configure the chart card during the install so you are not figuring it out in the parking lot before your first trip.

Transducer placement is where a lot DIY installs go wrong. A transom-mount transducer that catches air at speed gives you a blank screen right when you need depth information most. We evaluate your hull and running angle before recommending transom-mount, in-hull, or through-hull placement. On fiberglass hulls we have a preference for shooting through the hull when the layup allows it: no holes, no turbulence, and better readings at speed.

Most current multifunction displays also support NMEA 2000 network integration, which means your chartplotter can display engine data, depth, wind, and AIS targets from other devices on the same backbone. If you are starting fresh or upgrading an older boat, we plan the network before the first wire goes in.
